Project Reflection:
I started this project when we began our Digital Arts unit on prehistoric art, specifically our initiation into this project when we covered the domestication of canines (Man Created Dog).  This drawing was one originally set out for us to sketch while watching the documentary on this subject, and I chose it because it had potential to be a creation which emphasized the sharp contours of the subject as well as the material we were covering.  Drawing materials and resources which I used in the creation of this sketch were charcoal over an original lay of pencil.  I felt that the utilization of the charcoal in this sketch really improved my drawing skills in response to this medium in particular as I had never really used it this heavily in context of a large drawing.  The image trace tool in illustrator helped my scanned sketch's overall quality by darkening the contour lines and aiding the recognition of line movement within the piece that a lighter hand-drawn sketch was not capable of.  It also aided me in exploring a new medium on a program which I had not explored before.  In future experimentation with this technique, I believe that the knowledge this project has provided me with concerning both new techniques in hand sketching and digital conversion will come in handy during future school projects, casual photo editing, and exploration of personal art choice.  These skills will most likely be heavily utilized before I graduate Animas.  My final thoughts concerning this project include lie mainly with the fact that it both educated me as to the history of the arts, as well as paired this knowledge with applicable and innovative techniques to recreate the works of art's first pioneers.

Self Portrait

Artist Statement:
In everything I do, I try to reveal some truth.  Whether in my writing, art, or basic conversation, I attempt to view the world without rose-colored glasses.  In the construction of this composition, I took inspiration in my ever-present awareness of these concepts.  The images within the eyes of the skull represent my desire of societal change throughout our earthly prejudices and dogma, thus represented through the red flags and stormy clouds of change.  My actual face in the image floats above both this and the ever-present shadow of mortality (represented by the skull).  The pattern of speakers arranged neatly and monotonously around this self-representation stand for the constant bombardment of societal messages which are blatantly shot at my generation in particular. This juxtaposition of myself in the midst of our modern media represents much of the frustration I often feel towards the stagnation and domination of our capitalist agenda. The direction of the viewer's eyes towards the emphasized skull and my eyes within the skull I feel represents my expressed ideological solitude exceedingly well. I left the symbols of change within the skull's face due to the fact that I often feel, as a teenager, that my views, no matter how vehemently expressed, are drowned out by the media's drone and celebrity worship.

This photoshop tutorial (advanced) taught me how to combine images (as also demonstrated below) and add dynamic lighting to the final product using color adjustment and masking tools and options as well as applications of the paintbrush, sponge, and blur tools.

This photoshop tutorial (advanced) taught me how to effectively remove an object from its original background with the quick select tool and then believably transfer it to another background using the image options and mask tool.

Name Project

Picture
This name project was the first I completed in photoshop and used basic elements of feathering and gradients.  The images which make up my name are images taken from around the school and were photos which I deemed to possess aesthetic beauty.
